Billy Nasty

Resonant Vibes

Back in the early days, before the world of podcasts, mp3s, or even the internetz full stop, the best way of buying new music was to pop down to 3rd Order or Dominee Domini and buy a dodgy mix tape, fresh off the press from Doug Diamond's legendary tape copying machine. Fortunately we've moved on since then, but the appeal of new music is still the same for some of us. Those dodgy tapes introduced me to Billy Nasty, circa 1992/1993. One tape in particular will always be high on my list of influences - Nasty 13, complete with the likes of The Daou - Give Yourself to Me, LaTour E (Saranjhi Sunset mix) and loads of other classics that would go on to shape the tastes of myself and many like-minded reprobates around the world.

Anyway, I digress. Having had the pleasure to meet and dj with the man himself many times over the year, I still get excited at the mere mention of Billy Nasty, so seeing him doing an RV podcast brought back a lot of (hazy) memories. The mix doesn't disappoint - a lot of classic Nasty sounding tracks, love that Sandwell District sound right now so no surprise to see some of those on there, as well as the excellent Tiger Stripes release on Drumcode, a label who had dropped off my radar for a few years but seem to have returned to form.

Arto Mwambe

RA Podcast 176

A long time ago the Essential Mix used to be the definitive source of the best new underground mixes around.

These days it's impossible to look beyond the RA podcasts as being by far the best podcasts in the world of "underground" music, by a million miles.
But even RA sometimes manage to surpass themselves with a podcast that is truly amazing. Last year for me it was Lee Burridge's melancholy groover, and this year I'd have to go with this one from Arto Mwambe.

Showcasing a lot of their own material as Brontosaurus and of course as Arto Mwambe, this mix perfectly straddles the divide between electro-disco and deep house. Here's some blurb from RA, link below:

"...Who or what is Arto Mwambé? Until recently we were led to believe that he's a talented young producer from Burkina Faso. But it recently came out that the men responsible for the project are actually Christian Beißwenger (AKA CB Funk) and Brontosaurus boss Phillip Lauer. The two Frankfurt natives have been active in the city's electronic music scene since the turn of the decade, with Lauer making his mark with a run of choice deep house 12-inches on local label Séparé Recordings, and Beißwenger dabbling in the funkier end of microhouse and minimal techno. Soon after teaming up for a 12-inch of twisted electronic disco on Punkt, Lauer launched his Brontosaurus imprint and took Beißwenger under his wing.

It proved to be a good choice: The sublime rolling house of the Mudhutma! EP became quite the sleeper hit throughout 2007, and follow-up singles successfully straddled the line between quirky electro-disco and squelchy house. They've also started a new studio project alongside Daniel Nentwig and Thomas Sabrowsky of Extra Produktionen which also goes under the Brontosaurus tag, and this week's RA podcast will serve as an introduction to their little musical family. We spoke to the Mwambe guys about the mix, Burkina Faso and their forthcoming performance at RA's party at Trouw during this month's Amsterdam Dance Event..."

Slam mix

Monopod vol3

Really enjoying the Monopods, podcasts from Scotland's finest, Slam, recorded live at their Return To Mono night at the Sub Club in Glasgow.
Most people associate Slam with peaktime, driving techno but these mixes showcase their deeper, dubbier but no less dark side during their warmup sets. Excellent stuff. Check them out here: Monopods

Absolutely loving this mix at the moment. Proper deep down & dirty techno. Must admit I'd not heard of Spinoza before but this mix is ace. Some blurb:

Jamie Jones Essential Mix

Housey doingz

Been far too long since I heard a decent Essential Mix but this one makes up for it. If anything, going by his productions, I'd have expected a much techier mix from Jamie Jones, so was surprised to hear how housey a lot of it was (in a good way!). Reminiscent of the Essential Mix halcyon days, it has a "proper" house music feel that I've not heard for a long time. Excellent mix, definitely will be revisiting this.

Little White EarBuds Podcast - Peter Van Hoesen

Belgian techno - live mix

I've only recently discovered Sendai, an "experimental" project for Belgian producer Peter Van Hoesen. Whilst digging around for more info on his Sendai stuff I found this podcast for Little White Earbuds - it's a live set from FUSE in Brussels a few months back, not specifically done under the Sendai moniker but just as Peter Van Hoesen himself.
Definitely worth checking out, this is solid driving techno at its best, proper 4am teeth oot mentalness. Enjoy

Musically it's right on the money for me at the moment, a foray back into the world of the very deep & techy, bordering on ambient with tough techno overtones.... aceness
